Each year, the 7th of April marks the celebration of World Health Day. It was declared at the First World Health Assembly in 1948 and is in effect since 1950. This celebration is aimed to create awareness on specific health themes, highlighting priority areas of concern for the World Health Organization.
This year, the World Health Day theme and tagline is ‘Support nurses and midwives.’ The WHO aims to strengthen and raise the status of this key pillar of the healthcare workforce. Let us honour the tremendous contribution of nurses and midwives and recognise their vital role in keeping the world healthy and helping us lead a happier life.
Today, nurses and other health workers are at the frontline of COVID-19, putting their own health at risk to protect the broader community. We take a moment to thank them and show appreciation for their bravery and hard work. Their commitment to healthcare is also a reminder of we should follow public health advice to keep ourselves safe and healthy.
