The Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities has appointed Prodesign to prepare a guidance document for the design, installation and operation of energy-efficient street lighting in Mauritius. Good street lighting improves road safety and helps to deter criminal activity.
The guidance document will provide information on the type of street lighting to be used along various types of road. It will provide design guidance on various issues including the appropriate type of street lamp, the spacing and the height of the poles, the concrete bases to be used and the lighting levels needed. Hopefully, this exercise will also resolve problems such as the theft of power supply cables and a situation where many roads and motorways are currently left in the dark.
Vikram Bhujun will himself be leading this project and will be assisted by a team of engineers. Prodesign will be happy to receive views and comments on how to improve the street lighting system – you can contribute to the guidance document by sharing your opinion in the discussion forum on our website (www.prodesign.mu)
