Following an international RFP, Prodesign was appointed in 2013 for the renovation of the Hilton Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. The brief was to replace some major plant and equipment without any disruption to hotel operations.
The chillers and the main electrical panels were to be replaced and the overall installation upgraded. Prodesign advised the client on the best available technology based on whole life-cycle costs, after extensive dynamic simulations and modelling.
The major challenge was to retrofit the new installations, which were bigger, in very confined spaces and yet ensure they were operating at high efficiency. Consideration was also given in the design process to the health and safety of the construction workers, Prodesign working with the client to find alternative solutions to several constraints in the existing installations. Further challenges included the installation of new 1,250 kVA generators and the exhaust.
The project is expected to be completed in 2015 and will be a regional showcase for energy-efficient solutions.
